Help Light Up Schools and Health Clinics in Uganda

Our newest promotional initiative is to install our systems free of charge in schools and health clinics throughout Uganda. If you would like to support this program and help light up a school, you may do so through the purchase of a very cool solar LED keychain flaslight. Village Energy can be in your pocket for only 6 USD, and you'll have the assurance that every purchase goes towards the installation of our solar lighting systems in a school or health clinic in Uganda.

Our partner in this effort is Giant Steps of St. Louis, a school for children with autism spectrum disorder. The great folks at Giant Steps have agreed, as part of a global awareness and service project for their students, to help coordinate the packaging and shipping of the keychains.

Together, we've named this program Light up Africa.

Our Goals

We strive to increase access to affordable renewable energy, first for Ugandans, then for East Africans, and eventually for the developing world at large. By doing so, we provide rural and peri-urban populations the opportunity to improve their social, economic and environmental lifestyles.

Our Mission

Through innovative solar technologies, we aim to provide safe and affordable LED lighting to the millions of peri-urban and rural households and small businesses that rely on fossil fuels daily. We wish to improve the environment, as well as the economic and social lives of developing populations.

Why we do what we do

To your lungs, one day of kerosene lantern use is equivalent to two packs of cigarettes. It pollutes indoor environments, inviting respiratory and eye disease. To Uganda, it's equally as toxic. The country's paraffin consumption for lighting alone is 1.7 million barrels of oil per day, greater than the oil production of Libya. About 20% of rural household budgets go to paraffin, wax candles, and dry cells. This represents a million dollar business, but it does not empower Uganda: the goods are imported, and the money leaves the country. Village Energy adresses these problems by producing a safe, environmentally sound, and vertically- and locally-integrated product.
